ICON MARTINI HOSPITAL

COMMISSION

The inner courtyard of the Martini Hospital was a green oasis, where patients, visitors and staff could look at, but could not visit. Since the opening of the ‘new’ hospital in 2007 it has been a wish to have a place where one can briefly escape to and relax. Thanks to the intensive efforts of the foundation: Friends of the Martini Hospital, enough funds have been found to sponsor the project.

CONCEPT

ESCAPE TO AN ICONIC OBJECT

By adding a building in this surrounded garden the relation between hospital and its outer space was enhanced. The long sightlines of the courtyard are reserved by the new building. Around this courtyard and especially from the transparent main street, one has a view to the iconic, as a work of art designed building. In shape, material and in colour it tries to find a contrast with the hospital building.

DESIGN

Healing environment
By giving the building a shape where walls and roof overlap the building has become a counterpart to the hospital and an invitation to visit the courtyard. Contact with nature is one of the pillars of a healing environment. A gold-coloured envelope in a croissant-like shape provides both transparency and protection. It is tailored to the areas around the hospital as well as the areas of the building itself. It makes the visitor curious what’s inside and also gives the patient escaping from the hospital world the feeling of privacy. It should all lead to relaxation in a stressful environment. Reducing stress stimulates the patients’ healing.

Multifunctional
The building is divisible in various ways. All the furniture is movable and in this way the building not only functions as a “living room” as well as it is suitable to accommodate large groups, eg during a concert. Even moving the entire buffet belongs to the possibilities. Smart placement of curtains and the use of specially designed storage cupboards ensure that chairs and tables can be stored easily. The design of the furniture is made by Bart Vos VOS interior.

Building Information Model
The project was fully worked out in a BIM model, where construction and services are matched. The contractors have used the model for the production of various components, such as the large steel curved beams which were cut with a laser and the wooden ceiling construction sawed controlled by a computer-controlled saw. BIM has had a clear quality-enhancing effect and led to material savings.

SUSTAINABILITY

Energy efficient
By a proper orientation and positioning and the use of overhang a great extent of access of direct sunlight is prevented. The high degree of insulation of the outer shell in combination with a low temperature heating and high temperature cooling of the floor a low energy consumption is secured.
